NWS Holdings wins Caring Company award for 10 consecutive years

(3 May 2012, Hong Kong) NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings” or the “Group”; Hong Kong stock code: 659) has won the Caring Company logo granted by The Hong Kong Council of Social Service (“HKCSS”) for the tenth consecutive year, demonstrating its strong commitment to caring for the community, its employees and the environment. It is complimented by the Total Caring Award received in 2008/09, and the Outstanding Partnership Project Award in 2007/08.

HKCSS launched the Caring Company Scheme in 2002, aiming to promote corporate social responsibility (“CSR”) and social harmony through tripartite partnership in Hong Kong. Over 2,500 companies were awarded the Caring Company logo this year, and 130 of which received the 10 Consecutive Years Caring Company logo.

Mr Tsang Yam Pui, Executive Director and Chairman of the CSR Committee of NWS Holdings, said, “Community contribution and environmental awareness are the core values of the Group. NWS Holdings is committed to upholding CSR across its different businesses.” He added, “The Group and its subsidiary companies have always capitalized on its strengths and resources to benefit the community by working with NGOs and government bodies.”

NWS Holdings set up the NWS Holdings Charities Foundation in 2006 and since then has contributed over HK$13 million to various community welfare projects. One such project is the Life Rejuvenation Scheme, which runs year-round with a partner NGO. The Group also encourages staff to participate as volunteers. Its corporate volunteer team, NWS Volunteer Alliance, was formed 10 years ago. Nearly 2,000 staff and their family members have taken part, together contributing over 80,000 hours of service. The Group also organizes an annual NWS Caring Day to celebrate the Group’s First Trading Day through community service.

Caring for its own staff is an important concern of the Group. As well as providing a 5-day week and paternity leave, the Group also grants staff members birthday and examination leave. It also organizes activities for employees and their families in order to promote work-life balance. Environmental awareness is an integral part of the Group’s operations: an environmental committee was set up in 2007 to actively promote the green agenda by taking practical measures to conserve resources and minimize waste.

NWS Holdings was the first corporation in Hong Kong to run a geoconservation programme. Launched in 2008, the community-wide “NWS Hong Kong Geo Wonders Hike” has attracted over 10,000 participants and increased awareness of geological conservation through guided tours for the public and a young ambassadors training programme.

NWS Holdings’ two subsidiaries, New World First Bus and Hip Hing Construction, also garnered the 10 Consecutive Years Caring Company logo, while nine other subsidiaries received the 5 Years Plus Caring Company logo and the Caring Company logo 2011/12 respectively. The Group’s parent company, New World Development Company Limited, and its 21 subsidiaries have also been honoured with the Caring Company logo to reflect their CSR work
