NWS Holdings and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals care for the elderly in Sham Shui Po

(22 July 2013, Hong Kong) NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings” or “the Group”; Hong Kong stock code: 659) has organised the “Old Hong Kong” programme under the Life Rejuvenation Scheme 2013 in partnership with Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Yu Mak Yuen Integrated Services Centre. The programme helps older people living in Chak On Estate in Sham Shui Po through home visits, the distribution of food coupons and local tours, providing companionship and mental support while strengthening their connection with community.

The first outdoor activity of the year-long Old Hong Kong programme was a tram tour. Around 30 NWS Volunteer Alliance members accompanied 40 seniors on a tour to appreciate the attractions of Hong Kong Island. They were assisted by tour guides and visited the historic Lin Fa Temple in Tai Hang, which is a Grade One historical building.

Chak On Estate lacks such basic facilities as a wet market or restaurants. The elderly need to travel to other districts on foot or by public transport to buy daily necessities. In light of this, the Group’s volunteers pay regular visits to the participants and help them by distributing food coupons.

Sheila Tang, General Manager of Corporate Communication for NWS Holdings, said, “The older generation have made a significant contribution to the development of Hong Kong. We would like to offer something in return as a token of thanks by organising long-term community services for the elderly in need, as part of our effort to help build a caring and inclusive society.”

Sandy Heung, Supervisor of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Yu Mak Yuen Integrated Services Centre, said, “Chak On Estate’s location and the lack of facilities bring the elderly a lot of inconvenience in their daily life. The number of older people in need of support is also increasing. We believe that this programme can provide a wide range of support for the elderly and help them build a closer connection with their community.”

NWS Volunteer Alliance members have participated in the programme and taken care of the elderly through a range of activities. Since its establishment in 2001, NWS Volunteer Alliance has already contributed more than 100,000 hours of volunteer service.
