(28 December 2004, Hong Kong) NWS Holdings Limited (“NWS Holdings”; Stock code: 0659.HK) today announced that it fully supports the donation pledge of HK$500,000 by its parent company, New World Development Company Limited (“New World Group”; Stock code: 0017.HK), to the United Nations Children’s Fund (“UNICEF”). NWS Holdings has made an appeal to its over 20,000 staff for their generous donations to help people affected by the earthquake and tsunamis in South Asia.
To encourage employees’ participation in this charitable cause, New World Group has pledged to contribute a dollar for every dollar donated by its staff, including those working under NWS Holdings and other subsidiaries. The total funds raised by New World Group will not be less than HK$500,000 which will support UNICEF’s emergency relief operation in the affected areas, by providing essential supplies such as medicines, blankets, water tanks and water purification tablets to the victims.
Dr Cheng Kar Shun, Henry, Chairman of NWS Holdings, said, “This is the strongest earthquake in 40 years unleashing massive tidal waves that killed huge number of people and left more than one million displaced and homeless. As members of the global community, we need to lend a helping hand to our brothers and sisters in distress. NWS Holdings has thus formed a special task force to facilitate the fund raising programme internally, hoping that urgent assistance can be given to victims through UNICEF in a prompt and efficient manner.”
